Audrey Kyriacou is our 32nd Athlete to speak to us about making the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships Team. Members of the Spark Team will compete in Eugene (USA), from July 22nd to 27th 2014.

How did you get involved in Athletics?

I got into athletics through my local Little Athletic club Randwick Botany as an Under 8. At a primary school athletics carnival one of the parents suggested I should give it a go because I was faster than all the boys.

When you first heard that you made the team, what was your initial reaction?

I was ecstatic and relieved! I got a call during school and you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face!

Are you doing anything differently in preparation for this competition?

Not particularly. We are just focusing on my run-up and technique. This year my preparation is a lot more consistent than when I was in prep for Ukraine which is a major confidence boost.

What are you most looking forward to about the trip to Eugene (USA)?

The competition and the team. Obviously we are all over there to compete at our best which is definitely my main focus,  but the team environment is just an amazing thing to be apart of.

Who has been your biggest inspiration in this sport?

Probably my coaches Lyn and Wal Jacenko, as well as my LAC club president Tony Vecellio. They may not be current athletes but the amount of time and devotion they put into the sport is inspiring to everyone who knows them. Definitely would not be where I am now without their support!

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become a professional Athlete?

Stick to it, train hard and believe in yourself! You only get out what you put in so you’re development as an athlete is completely under your control
