Larissa Chambers is our 3rd Athlete to speak to us about making the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships Team. Members of team will compete in Eugene (USA), from July 22nd to 27th 2014.

How did you get involved in Athletics?

My older sisters started Little Athletics at Goodna in 2003. I thought it looked like fun so mum signed me up the next year.

When you first heard that you made the team, what was your initial reaction?

I was quite relieved to finally get the call that I had made the team because I wasn’t to sure. I didn’t have a qualifying leading up to Nationals so when I finally did the time in the final I was thrilled but unsure as well.

Are you doing anything differently in preparation for this competition?

Analysing my race at nationals with my coach (Vic Pascoe) I realised my starts weren’t the best in the field so I have definitely been focusing more on my starts, but other than that I haven’t changed anything.

I’m most looking forward to the environment of the event. It sounds strange, but to be around so many people that love the exact same thing that I do, it will be amazing. And being the home of Nike I’m also looking forward to the shopping as well.

Who has been your biggest inspiration in this sport?

Growing up my biggest inspiration would definitely have to be Cathy Freeman. She really just paved the way for young indigenous athletes so I thank her for that.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become a professional Athlete?

My advice would be to appreciate the bad days. No one is perfect, not even me. I don’t strive for perfection and I don’t strive to beat a particular person, I strive to do my best in what I do and to learn from my mistakes and to also have fun.
