Annabel McDermott is our 8th Athlete to speak to us about making the 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships Team. Members of the team will compete in Colombia, from July 15th to 19th 2015.
How did you get involved in Athletics?
I first got involved in athletics in 2008 at kuringgai little athletics club and throughout primary school where I enjoyed the field events. In year 8 I started running when Jimbo became my schools cross country coach.
When you first heard that you made the team, what was your initial reaction?
I was very excited and proud of what I had done to get the qualifying time and then win the qualifying race at nationals for selection in the team. I am very lucky and greatful for all the support I have received from my family, friends and school.
Are you doing anything differently in preparation for this competition?
I have continued training in a similar style to before, not changing a lot as I don’t want to get injured or my body not respond well to a new style of training. Jimbo has been great in getting me through the last few months of preparation and ready to race in Cali!
What are you most looking forward to about the trip to Colombia?
Travelling with the team to a new country and getting to know everyone is very exciting and I am looking forward to that however I cannot wait to race!
Who has been your biggest inspiration in this sport?
My biggest inspiration at the moment is Madeline Heiner after the times she ran in Europe! I also look up to the older girls and boys in the squad and hope to one day run as fast as them!
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become a professional Athlete?
I am no professional athlete but I love running I feel success come from passion.
