Athletes Exclusive with Cam McEntyre

Cam McEntyre is our 11th Athlete to speak to us about making the 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships Team. Members of the team will compete in Colombia, from July 15th to 19th 2015.

How did you get involved in Athletics?

I started at the age of 4 in tiny tots at my local little athletics club (Ku-ring-gai). I got into the sport after following my brothers footsteps and enjoying everything I participated in. I only started throwing Jav when I was 12 for a bit of fun and from then on I wanted to make the most out of it and I love it!!

When you first heard that you made the team, what was your initial reaction?

I got my automatic qualifier winning Nationals in March and the feeling was unreal! All the hard work coming back from injury in 2014 paid off and I think that’s what made it even more exciting. Getting the opportunity to represent Australia on the international stage is a privilege and I’m definitely grateful to have the experience to wear the Green and Gold!

Are you doing anything differently in preparation for this competition?

My coach and myself have decided to add a few things to my preparation leading up to WYC. We’ve added more strength and conditioning to increase my explosiveness as well as working on the more technical side of the throw.

What are you most looking forward to about the trip to Colombia?

The experience to a new culture and competing against the best throwers in the World.

Who has been your biggest inspiration in this sport?

Andreas Thorkildsen, he is the first male javelin thrower in history to be crowned European champion, World champion and Olympic champion. I love his technique and his casual approach to major championships.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become a professional Athlete?

Always enjoy what you’re doing and never put too much pressure on yourself!

What is your reaction?
