LONG-distance runner Jessica Trengove has beaten a host of SA sporting luminaries to win the Sports Star of the Year People’s Choice Award.
“Being recognised in the state as an athlete who people look up to is a huge honour,” Trengove said.
“That’s one of the reasons I love running — just the idea that I might be inspiring people out there to don the joggers and set themselves some challenges.
“Given one of my dreams is to inspire others, it makes me feel like I’ve achieved that a bit.”
The 27-year-old produced one of the most memorable moments of this year’s Commonwealth Games when she powered home in just her fifth ever marathon to claim bronze.
While the medal might be ‘stuffed in her bedroom somewhere’, Trengove has been overwhelmed with the reaction she’s received since being home.
“I met a lady who said she was in the ‘92 Comm Games marathon team with Kerryn McCann and she was saying how much my race moved her,” she said.
“There are just so many people who help get you there so there’s been a real sense of sharing your journey with them.
