On Friday, organisers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games released their latest venue plan proposal, which included some significant changes to the schedule most viewers would be used to.
Under the proposal, swimming events will happen at SoFi Stadium, the same place as the opening ceremony. This will create timing issues with the time it will take to convert the stadium into a swimming pool. As such, swimming will move to the second week, with athletics happening in week one.
Athletics and para-athletics will remain at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, the only stadium to host track and field competitions in three Olympic Games.
“The Olympic and Paralympic Games represent the pinnacle of athletic competition and achievement, and we’re proud to host the Los Angeles 2028 Games in some of the greatest stadiums and arenas ever built,” LA28 Chairperson and President Casey Wasserman said in a statement.
He added, “LA28’s updated venue plan will provide the ideal Hollywood stage for the world’s top athletes, and choosing from spectacular existing venues, wherever they are, rather than building new permanent or temporary stadiums, achieves more than $150 million in savings and new revenue to help maintain a balanced budget.”
The Olympic marathon will remain at the end of the Olympic Games.
