Amelia Mazza-Downie is our 9th Athlete to speak to us about making the 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships Team. Members of the team will compete in Colombia, from July 15th to 19th 2015.
How did you get involved in Athletics?
When I was 9 I did school cross country and made it through to states without any training. I decided I really liked the sport and so I joined little athletics and soon found my coach Keith Fearnley.
When you first heard that you made the team, what was your initial reaction?
I was so excited to find out I had made the team. I couldn’t wait to tell all my family and friends and I feel privelleged to be wearing the green and gold.
Are you doing anything differently in preparation for this competition?
I am trying to keep as much as I can the same and not leaving any stone un-turned.
What are you most looking forward to about the trip to Colombia?
I am looking forward to competing against older professional athletes from around the world. It will be interesting to watch the way they do things compared to us and I can learn from them. I am also excited about the team feeling of it all.
Who has been your biggest inspiration in this sport?
Genevieve LaCaze.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become a professional Athlete?
Don’t over train as a junior, the biggest thing in athletics is transitioning to a senior athlete well.
