Clare Gibson is our 6th Athlete to speak to us about making the 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships Team. Members of the team will compete in Colombia, from July 15th to 19th 2015.
How did you get involved in Athletics?
I started little athletics in U11’s and eventually moved into doing seniors (Friday night competitions) from there. I was actually a runner until 2011, then I moved to train with a high jump group who i’m still with today!
When you first heard that you made the team, what was your initial reaction?
Well they sent me a message at 7am in the morning asking to call them when I was free. I was scared i’d done something wrong or they’d tell me I didn’t make it! It was a very very good day when I got the news. No one at school really knew what it all meant so they just looked at me weird and asked why I was so happy hahah.
Are you doing anything differently in preparation for this competition?
Not really, i’m just trying to stick to what I know. Its got me this far so I know it can take all the way to Cali! Just a lot more determination and hard work!
What are you most looking forward to about the trip to Colombia?
I cant wait to go away with the team they’re a good bunch of people! Also being able to compete alongside some of the best U18 athletes from across the world is pretty exciting.
Who has been your biggest inspiration in this sport?
The people I train with! I’ve learnt so much off them and they’ve been there to support me the whole way. They inspire me and always make training heaps of fun.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become a professional Athlete?
Definitely work and hard and love what you do. Be prepared to sacrifice and give everything to achieve your dream. It’s only impossible until its done.
