Jacob Despard is our 33rd Athlete to speak to us about making the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships Team. Members of the Spark Team will compete in Eugene (USA), from July 22nd to 27th 2014.
How did you get involved in Athletics?
I’ve always been into Athletics, but only at a school level. It wasn’t until grade 7 when I began to train. A teacher aid who is a athletics coach approached me after a school carnival and it all started from there.
When you first heard that you made the team, what was your initial reaction?
I was in English when I got the call. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. I had been nervous ever since the race waiting for the call, it was a unreal feeling, it didn’t actually kick in for a couple days.
Are you doing anything differently in preparation for this competition?
In preparation for the competition I will just be doing what I always do for a big competition. My coaching team and support crew are amazing and I appreciate everything they do.
What are you most looking forward to about the trip to Eugene (USA)?
The experience of competing on the world stage.
Who has been your biggest inspiration in this sport?
Usain Bolt, I don’t think any sprinter my age could go past him.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become a professional Athlete?
Don’t let other people influence your decisions. If I have learnt anything over the my athletics career so far is that anything is possible. Never doubt yourself and your ability to succeed.
