Courtney Geraghty is our 42nd Athlete to speak to us about making the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships Team. Members of the Spark Team will compete in Eugene (USA), from July 22nd to 27th 2014.

How did you get involved in Athletics?

At age 9 I was first introduced to Athletics.  I saw an advertisement in the newspaper about come and try days and decided to give it a go! My parents always said that I was going to be a runner. Ever since then, I have loved athletics.

When you first heard that you made the team, what was your initial reaction?

When I first heard I had made the team I was at school.  I answered the phone and jumped around like a little kid. I couldn’t believe I had made it at first and it took a while to sink in.

Are you doing anything differently in preparation for this competition?

A lot of competitions leading into World Juniors as normal. But the training load has increased a bit. I have started doing gym work 1-2 times per week which I haven’t done before. Preparation for this competition is like any other competition, just training harder!

What are you most looking forward to about the trip to Eugene (USA)?

The experience of representing Australia and competing in a new place. For me I have never been overseas so the trip will definitely be one to remember. I am also looking forward to bonding with the team and getting to know everyone.

Who has been your biggest inspiration in this sport?

My biggest sporting inspiration would have to be Sally Pearson. The reason for this is because she is a confident and hardworking athlete who always gives her best. Even through tough times she is always strong and knows she can come back bigger and better next time. I admire her ability to succeed in the sport and always give 110% on the track. She is a great role model for any athlete.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become a professional Athlete?

My advice would be to train hard and never give up on what you believe in. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it and if something gets tough continue on and push through it, it will all work out in the end.
