Matthew Debruin is our 16th Athlete to speak to us about making the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships Team. Members of the Spark Team will compete in Eugene (USA), from July 22nd to 27th 2014.
How did you get involved in Athletics?
Dad registered me for little Aths when I was 5!
When you first heard that you made the team, what was your initial reaction?
Called dad to let him know, and was really just a relief and shock to to what was coming up in training haha
Are you doing anything differently in preparation for this competition?
A lot more gym work, and trying to be more confident.
What are you most looking forward to about the trip to Eugene (USA)?
I know it sounds weird but being in the heat of the moment, standing at the blocks getting ready for my first Race!
Who has been your biggest inspiration in this sport?
Dad being my coach and him putting all his spare time in preparing me for this opportunity
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become a professional Athlete?
Have heaps fun, and actually enjoy it!! Try to not take things too seriously, otherwise you start to shut important people off and you won’t enjoy the experience.
