The Women’s edition of the Junior 3000m event should be a battle royale between two particularly capable athletes, one hailing from New Zealand, the other a local of Essendon, Victoria.
Amelia Mazza-Downie – With personal bests over 3,000m and 5,000m respectively of 9:14 and 16:27, the Victorian athlete is in formidable shape, recently recording a World Junior Qualifier at the Victorian State 5,000m Championships.
Rosa Flanagan – With experience at all formats of IAAF World Championship events, Youth, Junior and Senior, Flanagan is likely to control the race early. A steeplechaser by trade with a 9:41 personal best, Flanagan competed at the 2015 Beijing World Championships, and brings a 9:07 3,000m personal best to the blue track of Lakeside.
Dark Horse Contenders:
Clare O’Brien – 9:34
Katrina Robinson – 9:39
Holly Campbell – 9:41
